מחקר
ACADEMIC PROFILE – TOVA ROSENBLOOM
My academic work includes two domains: (a) traffic psychology and (2) management.
(a) Traffic Psychology
My PhD dissertation dealt with the conceptualization of risky on-road behavior in uncertain conditions and its affinity to Sensation Seeking. Following this work and based on the Signal Detection Theory, I developed a unique method for discriminating among sensory-perceptive elements and other out-of-laboratory methods.
My following work further explored the themes discussed in the PhD in three different directions: a. the development of the knowledge of sensation seeking and risk taking; b. deepening the study of road users' behavior as a differentiated human behavior in regard to personality and emotional processes; and c. studying other aspects of the phenomenon of people on roads such as perceptual, cognitive, developmental, social and criminological aspects.
My research is aimed towards a construction of a multi-factorial model that describes human on-road behavior (both intentional and unintentional) that leans on:
v (a) Features of the road user (driver/pedestrian) such as personality, age, gender, psychophysical skills and cognitive processes [e.g. "Signal detection in everyday life traffic dilemmas" (Rosenbloom & Wolf, 2002), "Risk evaluation and risky behavior of high and low sensation seekers" (Rosenbloom, 2003),"Color preferences of high and low sensation seekers" (Rosenbloom, 2006); "Risk evaluation and risky behavior of high and low sensation Seekers" (Rosenbloom, 2003); "Risk Perception of Driving as a Function of Advanced Training Aimed at Recognizing, Avoiding and Handling Risks in Demanding Driving Situations, Age and Gender" (Rosenbloom, Shahar, Elharar & Danino, 2008); When two motivations race: The effects of the time-saving bias and sensation seeking on driving speed choices (Peer & Rosenbloom, accepted)].
v(b) Features of the road user's state such as time pressure, social facilitation and mortality salience [e.g. "Sensation seeking and abidance to red traffic-lights" (Rosenbloom, 2006; "Performance in a Practical Driver's License Test as a Function of the Presence of another Passenger, Order and Sex" (Rosenbloom, Shahar, Perlman, Estreich, & Kirzner, 2007); Crossing at red light: Behavior of individuals and groups (Rosenbloom, 2009)].
v (c) Features of the infrastructure such as the condition of the road, weather and geographic elements [e.g. "Women Drivers’ Behavior in Well-known Versus Less Familiar Locations" (Rosenbloom, Perlaman & Shahar, 2007); Committing driving violations: An observational study comparing city, town and village (Rosenbloom, Nemrodov, Ben-Eliyahu, Beigel, A., & Eldror, 2009); A within-subject design of comparison of waiting time of pedestrians before crossing three successive road crossings (Rosenbloom & Pereg, 2012)].
v (d) External conditions such as enforcement, distraction and campaigns [e.g. "Driving performance while using cell phones: An observational study" (Rosenbloom, 2006), "Sensation seeking and abidance to red traffic-light" (Rosenbloom, 2006); Vehicle impoundment regulations as a means for reducing traffic-violations and road accidents in Israel (Rosenbloom & Eldror, 2013)].
A model like this could predict the weight of each component in a probable road crash and would allow us to understand the best way to influence people to be less involved in road crashes. Special value can be attributed to the interaction of components of several dimensions of this model. For example, my work revealed that in mortality salience conditions high sensation seekers exaggerate their risky driving behavior to an extreme while low sensation seekers try to reduce risky behavior (Rosenbloom, 2003b).
One of my research innovations is developing and using field methods with high ecological value (e.g. my PhD dissertation which won much appreciation for this). The disadvantages of such methods are complexities in the control and measurements of variables. In order to overcome these limitations, my more recent research endeavors included the use of electronic devices aimed to monitor the drivers' behavior. At this moment I am conducting two large studies: one focused at measuring the distraction of drivers (with/without ADHD) in driving while performing verbal tasks on the cell phone, and the other focused at measuring the performance of drivers in the environment of billboards (both in real driving with those electronic systems).
My works published in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals and presented in international conferences, gained a national and international recognition, and have been of great interest to scientists and scholars, as well as to decision makers and stakeholders in safety authorities over the world.
Following the findings of one of my works the Israeli government has decided to further extend the vehicle impoundment regulations, and other countries also consider following suit (Rosenbloom, T., & Eldror, E. (2013). Vehicle impoundment regulations as a means for reducing traffic-violations and road accidents in Israel. Accident Analysis and Prevention, 50,423-429).
Additionally, a national project initiated by the Israeli Health Ministry adopted the recommendations of another of my works that has been conducted in a high-injury community and its insights were translated to practical implementations. This paper also provides a new and valid theoretical frame (Social Norms Theory) (Rosenbloom, T., Beigel, A., & Sapir-Lavid, Y. (2012). Actual and perceived social norms of children's road crossing behavior. Safety Science, 50, 175-180).
Thanks to a unique method used in another research based on 30-day-reporting of driving interesting insights were gained in regard to ADHD drivers. The findings of this research demonstrate the specific mechanisms that underlie the deficit of ADHD drivers in safety driving (Rosenbloom, T. & Wultz, B. (2011). Thirty-day self-reported risky driving behaviors of ADHD and Non-ADHD drivers. Accident Analysis and Prevention, 43, 128-133).
The literature pedestrians’ injury is very limited. Since in Israel pedestrians’ injury rates are very high some of my work attempt to enrich our knowledge of its origins (e.g., Rosenbloom, T., Pereg, A. (2012). A within-subject design of comparison of waiting time of pedestrians before crossing three successive road crossings. Transportation Research Part F, 15, 625-634). These works motivated new and spread research at this topic.
In sum, my academic activity is directed towards establishing a significant body of knowledge about human on-road-behavior. This included conducting more than ten studies a year (including MA thesis), the submission of proposals for Israeli and International grants, the organization of 1-2 international conferences a year, the presentation of my works in Israeli and international conferences, as well as scientific meetings, the reviewing of scientific papers for professional journals, membership in the International Editorial Board (AAP), membership on and the conducting of professional committees including the establishment of a unique academic program (since 2003) in Road Safety in Bar-Ilan University. We are now in an advancing stage of establishing the Masters Studies in Management of Road Safety in the Interdisciplinary Department of Social Sciences.
(a) Management
As a vocational psychologist and an organizational counselor, the field of management in general, and particularly human resources management is of my interest. In recent years I studied organizational processes in organizations such as El-Al aviation company, financial institutes, the IDF, the Israeli police, and high-tech companies. My research focuses on decision making in organizations, job burnout as related to personality traits of the employees as well as of the employers, and on the leadership styles and emotional intelligence interfaces. Also I study risky behaviors and risky decisions in organizations. I developed unique methods based on field studies and observations of real behavior combined with data bases of authentic evidence of behavioral parameters. The use such methods in the Management field is unique, as most of the data is usually based on self-report.
At the last two years three papers were submitted to organizational journals and they are now under review. In parallel, five other papers are in preparation in which deal with organizational culture of policemen, evaluation of training methods in organizations, job burnout and depersonalization among prison guards in security prison compared to criminal prison, over-education and the individual’s educational-occupational mismatch and agency and the construction of social preference in organizations. My academic activity in organizational behavior and management includes Doctorate and MA theses supervised by me, submission of research grants proposal for ISF and editorial, review of some Doctorate Dissertations as well as tens of papers foe A+ rank journals in Management and OB.
